DAACI Creates The Soundtrack for Public Health Wales’ Hapus Short Film

In mid-2023, DAACI was asked by Welsh video production company 73 Degree Films to join forces and create the soundtrack for Public Health Wales’ “Hapus” Programme’s latest short film.

The Hapus Programme is the latest campaign from Public Health Wales, designed to support mental health and provide assistance and resources to those in need.

DAACI Inventor and Co-Founder, Dr. Joe Lyske, personally took on the project, utilising DAACI’s AI tools to assist in his creative process and deliver the project within a tight deadline. The resulting short film was created to raise awareness and gain exposure for the programme, ensuring that the people of Wales know there is help available.

73 Degree Films says ” Eventually the final piece of the puzzle came together when I met the DAACI team at SXSW. I had been looking for a company that could help us create an original score using AI, so it felt very serendipitous that they were working on this solution and wanted to support a Welsh project.”

About Dr Joe Lyskes Composition

DAACI is the first symbiotic composition tool that has ethical music creation at its core – a comprehensive and interactive artificial intelligence (AI) system that empowers composers to arrange, orchestrate and produce authentic, high-quality and original music with emotional and narrative awareness. This specific score was composed by DAACI and its inventor Dr Joe Lyske, as an accompanying soundtrack for ‘Happiness,’ the short film created and produced by 73 Degree Films Ltd for Public Health Wales.

For this specific piece, Joe created meta-compositions, the heuristics or rules that DAACI then followed to write the several contextual themes that appear throughout the film. We hear clashing, dissonant strings and driving, relentless riffs that represent the central character’s melancholic state of mind. These musical themes reiterate throughout the film, gradually becoming more cohesive as the character’s thoughts become clearer and more positive following encouragement and routine from an unexpected encounter with a violin teacher. This source of structure and calm in her life is reflected in the music which evolves from dissonant to harmonious as the positive nature of mentorship, music and routine becomes evident. The piece culminates in a musical resolution representing this positive impact on mental wellbeing, and the cyclical nature of mentorship with the central character’s ultimate progression from student to teacher.

Finally, DAACI tailored the score to ensure that it was arranged to fit the frames of the film precisely, whilst ensuring coherent musical emotional intent. This collaboration between composer and AI sets a new precedent for the way in which composers of the future will craft their ideas and works.
